Christ Church Cathedral undergoes a historic restoration

Christ Church Cathedral is set to undergo a major restoration to protect and restore this heritage listed building to its former glory.

Heritage-listed Christ Church Cathedral is set to undergo a major roof restoration, ensuring the preservation of one of Newcastle’s most iconic landmarks.

The restoration project will begin on 27 October 2025 and is expected to run over the course of 18 months.

Essential work will repair and replace storm-damaged materials while remaining true to the Cathedral’s history and character.

The scope of the work includes repairing copper roofs and roof drainage systems, repairing water damaged fabric, and performing general maintenance to address wear and environmental factors affecting the Cathedral.

The insurance-led repairs will be overseen by a number of local businesses specialising in heritage restoration.

The team has a strong track record of heritage remediation projects and understands the unique requirements of delivering works to a heritage building.

After local, state and heritage approvals and an extensive tendering process, experienced construction company Duratec was chosen to conduct the work, as designed by EJE Architects Director Barney Collins.

Duratec has a strong team of local subcontractors who have been critical in numerous infrastructure renewal projects throughout our city.

The Cathedral was designed to serve the community and through this restoration, Christ Church Cathedral will continue to do so.
